Zaburzenia oddychania mogą stanowić działanie niepożądane po podaniu obu leków. Większe ryzyko jest związane z dożylnym podaniem leków przeciwdrgawkowych. W badaniach wykazano większe ryzyko zaburzeń oddychania w przypadku dożylnego podawania fenobarbitalu niż diazepamu. Najbezpieczniejsza jest droga doodbytnicza, ale przy zachowaniu właściwego dawkowania.
